What is the role of the Writing Place?

Welcome. The Writing Place provides academic writing support to all registered undergraduate and postgraduate honours/ diploma/certificate students from the College of Humanities (CHUM). The Writing Place tutors are senior postgraduate students who will help you refine your draft versions of essays, assessments or assignments through their constructive and supportive feedback. Group and individual sessions and virtual and contact consultations are offered. We are not an editing service, but we can help you improve your academic writing.

We also offer workshops/ seminars on academic writing, referencing and literature searches, topic analysis, etc.

The Writing Place tutors focus on assisting undergraduate and postgraduate honours/ diploma/certificate students:

  • To build and augment your academic literacy skills, which are essential to enable you to understand and engage with your reading and writing.
  • To assist you in refining your essay and assignment structure, cultivate a sound grasp of important academic concepts and nurture critical reading and writing skills.
  • To support you refine essay drafts, understanding the topic, constructing compelling arguments, and facilitating the development of excellent academic writing skills.
  • To enhance your academic language, guide you in mastering referencing techniques, and train you to navigate all the intricacies of academic integrity and avoid plagiarism.
  • To encourage you to maximise critical thinking in your academic writing and reading for meaning.

How do I submit my assignment and essay for review? Some key guidelines for submitting

  • Upload your fully typed draft of your essay at least five days before the due date. Click this link

  • We are not obliged to review essays submitted too close to the assessment due date (four or less days).
  • Please upload your essay/ assignment questions, guidelines, marking rubric, or any other details the lecturer/ tutor provided. This will enable the Writing Place tutor to provide you with the support you need.
  • A Writing Place tutor will be assigned to provide tailored assistance through face-to-face or online sessions.
