The BAMUS4 is a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Music Extended Curriculum degree which includes the Music Foundation Programme (one year) and is offered at Howard College Campus only. The BAMUS4 provides students from disadvantaged educational backgrounds an opportunity to redress historical inequalities, access challenges and diversity. The BAMUS4 gives students with low matric points and those from schools (categorised by the Department of Basic Education as quintiles 1, 2, or 3 schools) located in under-resourced and disadvantaged communities an opportunity to study at UKZN.
This four-year programme (a minimum of eight semesters) includes four core introductory courses: Foundational Practical Studies; Foundational Performance Skills; Introduction to Music Fundamentals; and Introduction to Academic Writing in Music. Students must pass all of the Foundational courses before they can progress with the Music degree programme. The subsequent three years follow the standard Bachelor of Arts in Music programme.
Selection criteria: Students should achieve between 22-27 matric points. An audition is required for all Music programmes including BAMUS4 – African Music and Dance/Choral Studies/Jazz/Opera/Pop Voice/Western Classical Music.
