Sharing Experiences and Knowledge to Facilitate Community Change and Progress

Master of Education in Social Justice Education student, Mr Philani Shezi (25) was recently awarded an Erasmus+ internship with Liepaja University in Western Latvia to learn, grow, and develop his research and teaching skills.

Shezi, who considers himself, a teacher and advocate for social justice education, strongly believes that this opportunity will enhance his research and teaching skills in order to contribute to the UKZN community.

He described the application as ‘swift’ saying he went through a successful interview process and received high-quality communication from both institutions involved effectively and efficiently.

Shezi applauded the warm and welcoming environment of UKZN’s International Office as well as its ability to develop students, saying: ‘The University has managed to provide all necessary information, including common spaces, whilst offering support throughout the internship programme.’

Having recently experienced a new country, Shezi appreciates the beauty of South Africa and its diversity, emphasising how the internship fostered more passion for his field of study. ‘This opportunity has allowed me to influence public attitudes through school visits, lectures, and university presentations. I was able to interact with students and scholars from diverse backgrounds, improving my education and career prospects.’

He maintains that living in a foreign country has increased his self-confidence, bravery, potential, and self-awareness. ‘The International Office’s programmes and activities provided networking opportunities, allowing me to make friends and learn about a different country. Despite his physical differences, he felt no difference,’ he added.

Shezi reminded his peers to step outside of their comfort zones to foster growth and achievement.

‘Be willing to change your perspective on some aspects of yourself and those around you – to blend in with the majority, you don’t always have to alter who you are. Your individuality is more appealing; never stop embracing it,’ he said.
