Overcoming adversity with a fighting spirit and the unwavering support of his family, Mr Tyler Alicks graduated with a BA in Marketing and Media Studies.
At the age of 15, Alicks survived a car accident that took the lives of his best friend and cousin and left his brother in a coma. Although Alicks sustained the least severe physical injuries, the emotional stress and trauma was debilitating.
‘I struggled to trust anyone, fearing the possibility of losing them. However, I found strength in honouring their memories and I realised that everything I do is a tribute to them.’
He added that, ‘This degree provided me with the tools to navigate the world of marketing and media, allowing me to pursue my passion and make a meaningful impact in the field.’
Two weeks prior to the accident, he returned from a three-week soccer camp in Italy, representing South Africa with Travelsport.
‘After my accident I tried very hard to get back into it but I couldn’t. I now play amateur football and coach at a local soccer club.’ He said that his family, especially his mother and grandmother, played a crucial role in helping him navigate the dark times: ‘They ensured that I never felt alone, constantly reminding me of the love and support surrounding me. I am particularly grateful to my grandparents. Whenever I hit a wall I could always rely on them to help.’
His proud grandmother, Ms Karen Sallie, works at UKZN within the College of Humanities. ‘Tyler is an inspiration and his graduation marks the culmination of a journey defined by passion, perseverance, and unwavering dedication. As a family, we are filled with pride. Congratulations, Tyler and as you step onto the pitch of life’s grand game, remember: the world is your oyster, so dribble past obstacles and score the goals of your dreams,’ she said.
Alicks is currently pursuing his BCom Honours in Marketing Management.
