Cruciality of Mastering Multiple Skills to Enhance Understanding of Field

A research focused on the portrayal of African ancestral calling in the South African reality show Ubizo has earned UKZN staff member, Mr Bongani Ndimande a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree.

Ndimande shared that he wanted to enhance his video production interests and knowledge in producing and editing motion pictures, recognising the importance of mastering multiple skills to understanding of any storyline.

As part of his honours program, he took part in a 48-hour film production course that stretched one’s knowledge of the medium as an attempt to complete his study which research explores an often-overlooked topic: African spirituality as it is frequently misrepresented and misunderstood by society.

’My research addresses a subject that receives little attention since African spirituality is frequently misinterpreted, leading to misunderstandings by the general public’, he said.

Ndimande had to balance his studies and family/work in order to earn the degree. ‘Among the difficulties I encountered during my academic pursuits were managing my time effectively and making significant sleep sacrifices in order to fulfill deadlines. Despite the challenges, I was able to overcome them and acquire the skills I needed to succeed’, he said.

Ndimande thanked his family for being instrumental in supporting him through this period; his workplace managers; as well as the UKZN CRD Video Production Team for allowing him to dedicate significant hours to his studies.

He described the completion of his degree as a relief and reflection of his personal growth, ‘shaped by the experiences of many amazing individuals who have encouraged self-acceptance and self-awareness. ‘My future plans involve continuing to pursue my chosen career path and utilising my music and motion picture skills to positively impact lives’, added Ndimande.

He advised his peers to study further, saying this creates many opportunities and opens new life-changing horizons.
