The University of KwaZulu-Natal hosted its annual Open Day, welcoming eager learners and their families to both the Westville and Pietermaritzburg campuses.
The event saw an impressive turnout of over 12 000 high school students, all keen to learn about the myriad opportunities available at UKZN.
Open Day provided invaluable career guidance, offering insight into the University’s diverse degree programmes and support services. Attendees had the chance to learn more about the fives campuses, participate in informative sessions on the study options available within the University’s four Colleges, and engage with various departments including the Sports Division, Student Funding, the Central Applications Office (CAO), the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), the International Office, the Applications and Information Office, and the Disability Unit.
It also featured live entertainment from UKZN student and host Ms Ziningi Mtshali and the Impi’s mascot (UKZN’s rugby team), a selfie booth and 360-degree spin camera, complimentary popcorn and slushies, and fun games and competitions with exciting prizes up for grabs.
Passionate about Drama and the Arts, Mr Aphelele Tshabalala from Sithengile High said he was excited to learn about the programmes on offer and possible career paths within the entertainment industry.
Ms Lershaan Domingo from Mariannridge High who received career guidance and tips on to how to apply through the CAO said she looked forward to studying Law, while Ms Luyanda Sibisi from Mvoti High School said attending Open Day helped her learn more about Finance as her degree of interest.
Having attended with her friends, Grosvenor Girls’ High School learner, Ms Lihle Mnembe who is interested in studying Medicine, said her other options included Nursing and Applied Physics.
Mr Mohammed Ibrahim from Kharwastan Secondary who is interested in Computer Science, Astrophysics and Statistics said he found the Open Day extremely informative as it put everything into perspective, while Glenwood High’s Mr Jake Dempsey who found out about the Open Day from his school said he was amazed by the campus and excited to learn about the career paths open to a mechanical engineer.
