Mr S’fundo Mthembu from Groutville Secondary School who achieved distinctions in all his matric subjects has registered to study towards an LLB at UKZN.
He said he chose UKZN because of its high academic rankings and reputation for academic excellence. ‘I know a few former UKZN students and they are fire in their workplaces. My research revealed that the University offers the best Law education. Plus, it is closest to home.’
Mthembu added that his career choice was shaped by his passion to contribute to reducing the crime rate.
Growing up in Groutville in KwaDukuza Municipality, he observed that people experience crime in churches, schools and generally in the area. He also noted the lack of priority given to cases opened by those who cannot afford legal assistance.
‘I grew in a crime dominated area,’ he said. ‘I want to contribute to reducing crime, fraud and corruption especially in the corporate world, and that is why I am interested in Corporate Law.’
Mthembu said he expected to do well in matric, but achieving 100% in Business Studies and being recognised as the top performing learner in the entire iLembe District was a pleasant surprise.
‘I received an invitation to the Durban ICC, where I represented Groutville High School and the iLembe District at a provincial level. I was also invited to KwaDukuza, where I secured the first position among all schools in the area. Recently, I attended another award ceremony at Mandeni Town Hall,’ he said. Studying hard in his first three terms made the final exams easier.
‘In Term 1, I studied to the point of craziness and attended early morning study sessions and weekend classes.’ He praised his family for their support, guidance and encouragement. He expressed his ‘humblest gratitude to the Principal of Groutville High School, Mr S C Gumede and all the teachers who contributed to my academic success.’
While aware of potential challenges in transitioning to university life, he is hoping for a smooth learning process at UKZN.
