Being awarded an Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship will enable Ms Nokuzola Mbona to fulfil her dream of studying in the United Kingdom.
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Social Sciences Honours in Criminology and Forensic Studies at UKZN, she has applied to study for a Masters in Social Science Research (Criminology) at Nottingham University.
The Emma Smith Overseas Scholarship is awarded to provide top-performing female postgraduate students who reside in eThekwini. It promotes equal access to education, cultural exchange, leadership development, and giving back.
‘Scholars are encouraged to develop leadership skills and become role models, contributing positively to their societies,’ said Mbona. ‘I intend to share my knowledge and experiences when returning home.’
Mbona will be the first person in her family to travel out of South Africa, serving as an inspiration to those close to her. She is looking forward to meeting new people, and experiencing a different culture, food and academic atmosphere.
She expressed her gratitude to her family and the University for their support, as well as the Emma Smith Overseas Programme’s founders and the judges for enabling her to be a part of this prestigious programme. ‘You have opened innumerable doors for myself and many others,’ she said.
